British paratroopers opened fire on a civil rights march against internment in the Bogside, killing thirteen people; another died later of his wounds. A tribunal cleared the soldiers within three months, but the Saville Inquiry found in 2010 that none of the dead had posed a threat, and the Prime Minister apologised. The killings drove recruits to the IRA and deepened the Troubles.
