In about seventeen minutes on the evening of 16 March 1945, some 225 RAF Lancasters dropped high explosives and incendiaries on Würzburg. The firestorm killed around 5,000 people and destroyed nearly nine-tenths of the old centre, with its churches and Baroque streets. Rebuilding took decades, and the city marks the anniversary every year.
