At the end of the Second Opium War, British and French troops looted the Qing emperors' vast garden palace of Yuanmingyuan outside Beijing. On Lord Elgin's orders, British soldiers then set it ablaze in reprisal for the torture and killing of captured envoys. Its broken stone pavilions in European style are preserved as a reminder of China's humiliation by foreign powers.
