John Calvin, a French refugee, made Geneva a model Protestant city, preaching at St Pierre Cathedral, writing the Institutes of the Christian Religion and founding an academy in 1559 to train ministers. Exiles from France, England and Scotland, among them John Knox, carried his ideas home, and Reformed churches from Scotland to the Netherlands and New England grew from Geneva.
