Carlisle Indian Industrial School

Army officer Richard Henry Pratt opened the first federal off-reservation boarding school in old cavalry barracks at Carlisle, taking thousands of children from more than 140 Native nations. Pupils had their hair cut, their languages banned and their names changed, and many were sent to work on local farms. Carlisle became the model for hundreds of schools; children buried in its cemetery are still being returned to their nations.
