In December 1994 three cavers found a cave above the Ardèche gorge, sealed by a rockfall for millennia, whose walls carry hundreds of animals: lions, rhinoceroses, mammoths, bears and horses, drawn with shading and a sense of movement around 36,000 years ago. The find pushed back the accepted date of accomplished cave art by many thousands of years.
