In September 1939 France turned a tile works at Les Milles, near Aix-en-Provence, into a camp for German and Austrian nationals, many of them refugees from Nazism, among them the painters Max Ernst and Hans Bellmer. Under Vichy it became a transit camp, and in August and September 1942 about 2,000 Jewish men, women and children were sent from it via Drancy to Auschwitz.
