On 11 September 1973 the armed forces under General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the elected socialist president Salvador Allende, bombing La Moneda palace from the air; Allende died inside. Seventeen years of military rule followed, in which more than 3,000 people were killed or disappeared and tens of thousands were tortured, in places such as Villa Grimaldi and the National Stadium.
