Backed by Ferdinand and Isabella, Christopher Columbus sailed from the river port of Palos with three ships and about 90 men, many of them local sailors, and reached the Caribbean in October. His return in March 1493 began lasting contact between Europe and the Americas, followed by conquest, colonisation, the exchange of crops and diseases, and the Atlantic slave trade.
