In the early hours of Christmas Day 1974 a small, intense cyclone crossed Darwin, destroying more than 70 per cent of its buildings and killing 66 people. Over the following week about 35,000 residents were evacuated, most of them by air. The city was rebuilt under new cyclone-resistant building codes that changed how houses were built across northern Australia.
