The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was chartered in 1602 with powers to trade, wage war and found colonies across Asia, and its shares were traded on the new Amsterdam exchange. Its spice monopoly built the wealth of the Dutch Golden Age, at the cost of violent conquest in the Indonesian archipelago and the use of enslaved labour.
