Argentina's military junta seized the British-ruled islands, which it calls the Malvinas. Britain sent a naval task force across the South Atlantic; after landings at San Carlos Water and battles at Goose Green and on the mountains around Stanley, the Argentine garrison surrendered on 14 June. 649 Argentine and 255 British servicemen and three islanders died. Defeat hastened the junta's fall and Argentina's return to democracy.
