After a decade of conventions and referendums, six self-governing British colonies united as the Commonwealth of Australia. On New Year's Day 1901 a crowd of tens of thousands watched the first governor-general and federal ministers sworn in at a temporary pavilion in Sydney's Centennial Park. The new nation's first laws included the White Australia policy, which lasted into the 1970s.
