A month into the war, German armies sweeping through Belgium and northern France came within about 50 kilometres of Paris. French and British forces counter-attacked along the Marne, helped by reserves rushed from the capital, some in requisitioned taxis, and forced the Germans back to the Aisne. The battle ended hopes of a quick war, and both sides began digging the trenches of the Western Front.
