Over two days in July 1942 French police arrested 13,152 Jews in Paris, 4,115 of them children. Families were held for days in the Vélodrome d'Hiver with almost no food or water, then sent through Drancy and camps in the Loiret to Auschwitz; very few came back. Drancy was the transit camp for most of the 76,000 Jews deported from France. In 1995 President Chirac acknowledged the French state's responsibility.
