Uruguay, Olympic football champion in 1924 and 1928, hosted the first FIFA World Cup in July 1930, timed for the centenary of its constitution. Thirteen teams took part; most European nations declined the long sea voyage. The Estadio Centenario, built in under a year, hosted the final, in which Uruguay beat Argentina 4–2 before a crowd of about 68,000.
