The Virginia Company's settlers built a fort on the James River in the lands of the Powhatan paramount chiefdom. Most died in the first years from disease, starvation and conflict, but tobacco exports from 1614 secured the colony. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in North America and hosted its first representative assembly in 1619.
