Cut off while retreating west from Richmond, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant in the parlour of Wilmer McLean's house. Grant's terms let the men go home on parole, keeping their horses. Other Confederate forces gave up over the following weeks, and the surrender is remembered as the end of the Civil War and of the Confederacy.
