While teaching mathematics at the University of Padua, Galileo Galilei built improved telescopes and saw mountains on the Moon, countless stars in the Milky Way and four moons circling Jupiter. He published the findings in The Starry Messenger in 1610. The observations supported Copernicus and led, two decades later, to his trial by the Inquisition in Rome.
