Enrico Scrovegni, son of a Padua moneylender whom Dante placed among the usurers in Hell, built a chapel beside his palace and had Giotto cover its walls with the lives of the Virgin and Christ and a Last Judgement. Giotto gave his figures weight, feeling and real space, breaking with flat Byzantine conventions, and the cycle shaped Italian painting for two centuries.
