In the early hours of 7 May 1945, in a technical school serving as Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims, General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender of all German forces, to take effect late on 8 May. Stalin insisted on a second signing in Berlin the next day. The room where it happened, its walls still hung with the Allies' operations maps, is kept as a museum.
