Governor Louis-Hector de Callière received about 1,300 delegates of some 39 First Nations, among them the Haudenosaunee and the Great Lakes allies of New France, on a field prepared outside Montreal, and on 4 August 1701 they ratified a general peace. It ended the long Beaver Wars over the fur trade. The Wendat leader Kondiaronk, one of the treaty's chief architects, died during the talks.
