For Canada's centenary, Montreal staged a world's fair on an enlarged Île Sainte-Hélène and the new, man-made Île Notre-Dame, and counted about 55 million visits. It left Moshe Safdie's Habitat 67 housing and Buckminster Fuller's American dome, now the Biosphère. During the fair France's president, Charles de Gaulle, called out 'Vive le Québec libre!' from the City Hall balcony, emboldening Quebec separatists.
