Ancestors of today's Shona people built Great Zimbabwe's dry-stone walls without mortar, and at its height it may have housed over 10,000 people. Its rulers controlled gold and ivory trade to the Swahili coast, as Chinese porcelain and Persian glass found there show. Colonial writers denied its African origin; independent Zimbabwe took its name from the site.
