In September 1981 a group of women who had walked from Wales arrived at RAF Greenham Common in Berkshire to protest against plans to base American cruise missiles there, and set up camp at the gate. From 1982 it was a women-only protest, and that December about 30,000 women joined hands around the base. The last missiles left in 1991; the camp ended in 2000 and the common reopened to the public.
