On 26 October 1985 the Governor-General handed the freehold title of Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park to its Anangu traditional owners, after years of campaigning. The Anangu leased the park back to the federal government for 99 years, and it is now run jointly by Anangu and park staff. At the owners' request, climbing Uluru was banned from October 2019.
