Harvey Milk ran a camera shop on Castro Street, heart of San Francisco's growing gay neighbourhood, and in 1977 won a seat on the city's Board of Supervisors, among the first openly gay people elected to office in the United States. He helped defeat a 1978 ballot measure to bar gay teachers. That November he and Mayor George Moscone were shot dead at City Hall by a former supervisor.
