Hoxha's Albania and its bunkers

Enver Hoxha ruled Albania from 1944 until his death in 1985, breaking in turn with Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union and China until the country stood almost alone. Fearing invasion, the regime built about 170,000 concrete bunkers, while the Sigurimi secret police imprisoned or interned tens of thousands. One-party rule ended in 1991. Two vast nuclear bunkers in Tirana and the former secret police headquarters are now museums.
