On 2 August 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait and annexed it within weeks. Through seven months of occupation Kuwaitis organised a resistance while the United Nations authorised force. A US-led coalition began bombing in January 1991, and a ground campaign freed Kuwait on 26 February; retreating Iraqi forces set more than 600 oil wells alight. The war reshaped the Gulf's security for decades.
