Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer led troops into the walled garden of Jallianwala Bagh, where thousands had gathered on the Baisakhi festival despite a ban on meetings, and ordered them to fire without warning. Officially 379 people were killed; Indian estimates were far higher. The massacre turned many moderate Indians, including Gandhi and Tagore, against British rule.
