9500BCc. 9500–8000 BC · Tell es-Sultan, Jericho
Jericho and the first walled town

Beside a spring in the Jordan Valley, people who had begun to farm built one of the world's earliest permanent towns. Around 8000 BC they raised a stone wall and a solid stone tower more than eight metres high, among the oldest monumental structures known. The mound of Tell es-Sultan, excavated by Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2023.
