In October 1990 about 800 people marched through Johannesburg in the first Pride parade in Africa, organised by the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand and the anti-apartheid activist Simon Nkoli. Campaigners then won a clause banning discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in the interim constitution of 1994 and the final one of 1996, the first such protection in any national constitution.
