The Khmer Rouge emptied Phnom Penh within days of taking power and drove the population into rural labour camps. Through execution, starvation and overwork, around 1.7 million people died in under four years. Tuol Sleng school became prison S-21, where around 15,000 people were held before being killed, most of them at Choeung Ek. Survivors still give testimony.
