On All Saints' morning a powerful earthquake, a tsunami and days of fire destroyed much of Lisbon and killed tens of thousands. The Marquis of Pombal rebuilt the Baixa on a grid with timber frames designed to resist shaking, and his questionnaire to parishes is seen as an early step in seismology. The disaster also shook European thinkers' faith in a kindly providence.
