After the Diet of Worms outlawed him, Martin Luther was seized on the road by his protector's men and hidden in the Wartburg above Eisenach, where he lived as 'Junker Jörg'. In about eleven weeks he translated the New Testament from Greek into German. Printed in September 1522, it sold thousands of copies and helped shape a common written German.
