In 1919 Germany's national assembly met in the Weimar theatre, away from revolutionary Berlin, and wrote the constitution of the country's first parliamentary democracy. That spring Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus school in Weimar; it moved to Dessau in 1925 and shaped modern design worldwide. Both ended under Nazi rule, and the Bauhaus closed under pressure in 1933.
