Royal Macedon and the rise of Alexander the Great

Philip II made Macedon the leading power in Greece before he was assassinated in the theatre at Aigai in 336 BC. His son Alexander, born at Pella, conquered the Persian Empire and reached India, spreading Greek language and culture across the Near East. Philip's tomb at Vergina, found unlooted in 1977, held gold, armour and wall paintings.
