Francisco Madero's call to rise against the long rule of Porfirio Díaz in November 1910 opened a decade of civil war in which leaders such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa fought for land, power and reform. Around a million people died. The 1917 constitution promised land reform and workers' rights, and the revolution's story was later painted across public walls by muralists such as Diego Rivera.
