The Yongle Emperor, who had seized the throne in Nanjing, moved the Ming capital north to his old power base at Beijing. Over fourteen years workers built a walled palace of nearly a thousand buildings, with the Temple of Heaven to the south. Twenty-four Ming and Qing emperors ruled from it until the last, Puyi, was expelled in 1924.
