Morant Bay rebellion

A generation after emancipation, the Baptist deacon Paul Bogle led hundreds of poor farmers to the courthouse at Morant Bay to protest against unjust courts and the lack of land. The militia fired, and the crowd killed eighteen people and burned the building. Under martial law troops killed or hanged hundreds, among them Bogle and the politician George William Gordon, and Jamaica lost its elected assembly.
