Moundville, Mississippian capital of the Black Warrior valley

Between about 1000 and 1450 Mississippian people built a planned town above the Black Warrior River, with 29 earthen platform mounds around a great plaza. At its height it was the political and religious centre of the valley, the second-largest Mississippian site after Cahokia. The Muscogee, Choctaw and Chickasaw nations are counted among its descendants; a park museum now displays the finds.
