Lahore was a Mughal capital under Akbar, who held court there from 1585 to 1598, and a favoured seat of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. They rebuilt its fort with tiled walls and mirrored halls, laid out the Shalimar Gardens in 1641–42 and saw the Wazir Khan Mosque built; Aurangzeb added the vast Badshahi Mosque in 1673. The fort and gardens are a World Heritage Site.
