On 26 November 2008 ten gunmen of the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba landed by dinghy in south Mumbai and attacked the main railway terminus, the Leopold Cafe, the Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi hotels and the Jewish centre at Nariman House. Over nearly three days 166 people were killed. The sieges, broadcast live, led India to overhaul coastal security and create a national counter-terrorism agency.
