Around the year 1000 Norse voyagers from Greenland built turf-walled halls and workshops at the northern tip of Newfoundland, a base for the 'Vinland' voyages told in the sagas. Found by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad in 1960, it is the only confirmed Norse site in the Americas, and wood cut there with iron tools has been dated to 1021, almost five centuries before Columbus.
