Operation Barbarossa and the defence of Brest Fortress

Germany and its allies invaded the Soviet Union at dawn along a front from the Baltic to the Black Sea. At Brest on the Bug river, the frontier fortress was surrounded within hours, but Soviet soldiers and their families held parts of it for weeks. The Eastern Front that opened that day became the largest theatre of the war and cost tens of millions of lives.
