Paraguay under Francisco Solano López went to war in 1864 with Brazil, then Argentina and Uruguay. Long sieges such as Humaitá, battle, hunger and epidemics killed a large share of Paraguay's people, perhaps more than half, and left women to rebuild the country. The war ended when López was killed at Cerro Corá in 1870, and Paraguay lost territory to both of its large neighbours.
