After silver was found in the Cerro Rico in 1545, Potosí grew into one of the largest cities in the world. Indigenous men forced to work under the mita draft, and enslaved Africans at the royal mint, produced silver that financed Spain's empire and flowed through Manila to China. Miners' cooperatives still work the mountain today, in harsh conditions.
