On 25 May 1809 residents of Chuquisaca, now Sucre, ousted the Spanish president of the Audiencia of Charcas, one of the first revolts of the independence era. Sixteen years of war followed, in which Juana Azurduy led guerrilla forces in the countryside to the east. On 6 August 1825 an assembly in the old Jesuit university chapel declared the independence of a new republic, named after Bolívar.
