José Gabriel Condorcanqui, a muleteer and local chief descended from the last Inca ruler, seized and hanged the Spanish corregidor of Tinta in November 1780 and took the name Túpac Amaru II. His revolt against forced labour and colonial taxes spread across the southern Andes. Captured in 1781, he was executed with his wife Micaela Bastidas in Cusco's main square; relatives fought on until 1783.
