Rosalía de Castro, born in Santiago in 1837, published Cantares gallegos in 1863, the first major book of modern poetry in Galician, a language then looked down on as rustic. Her verse gave voice to the rural poor, to women left behind by mass emigration and to Galician identity, and launched the Rexurdimento, or revival. Galicia's Day of Letters is held each 17 May, the book's anniversary.
